It's back! #thebigstring

Join over 100 young string players from grade 1 to grade 8+ and perform in Gloucester Cathedral

Our repertoire this year features Grieg's beautiful Holberg Suite (with specially commissioned extra parts) and a new concerto by Jeff Moore featuring celebrated violinist Michael Bochmann as soloist.

Once again our inspirational Musical Director, Glyn Oxley, will lead a team of experienced tutors from Gloucestershire Academy of Music, Cotswold Music Tutors & Gloucestershire Music.

Monday 12th February:
9.30am to 4.00pm, Rehearsal at Pates Grammar School, Cheltenham, GL51 0HG

Tuesday 13th February:
9.30am to 3.00pm, Rehearsal at Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester, GL1 2LX
3.00pm Concert for all family and friends at Gloucester Cathedral

Students will need to bring a packed lunch, snack and drink with them each day.

You will receive the music for the event by email before the end of November to enable you to practise ahead of the event.

The generous support of Make Music Gloucestershire allows places to be offered for a fee of just £30 per student.
Closing date for applications is 16th January 2018. Please note we reserve the right to close applications early.

Tuffley & Calton pupils wowed by professional Chineke! Orchestra musicians & talented young composers from Gloucestershire

Chineke! Orchestra professional musicians + GAM’s top quality teachers gave inspiring performances, talks and opportunities to try an instrument at two Gloucester primary schools in July.

Plus, on 4 July at 2pm, a Diverse Futures concert was held at Kings Theatre, Gloucester, featuring a professional string quartet from BAME orchestra Chineke! It also included new music composed and performed by some of Gloucestershire's’ best young music talent.

Bursary Applications - Increased Limits Now Available

The ‘Gloucestershire Academy of Music’ Bursary fund is available to all students up to the age of 18 years at the beginning of the academic year being applied for.

Students can now apply for up to a maximum of £550.00 - conditions apply.

Although financial circumstances are taken into consideration, all applications are considered on an individual basis also taking into account the students aptitude for music making.

New and existing students can apply at any time of the year for assistance with term-time fees, and/or those to attend a holiday music courses with Gloucester Academy of Music. The application forms can be requested from our office or downloaded by clicking here. All applications should be returned in a sealed envelope marked 'Confidential' and addresssed to 'The Bursary Committee.

Monday String Zone @ Gloucestershire Academy of Music

String Zone, the county's specialist string centre for all string players of grade 5 and above to advanced level, is available on a Monday evening. With sessions on technique, chamber music and ensemble playing the String Zone offers unrivalled tuition in Gloucestershire. To find out more email

Our Popular GAM sessions now available in Cheltenham

Gloucester Academy of Music now offers a Junior department in Gloucester on a Saturday morning and in Cheltenham on a Saturday afternoon.

In Cheltenham we offer Singing & Rhythm Groups, Choir, String Ensembles and Chamber Music
